TEAM HISTORY
Murderball originally came to Michigan in the late 1980s with the Detroit PowerPlay. The game was agressive and "crazy" to watch and, while they had heart, the team was unable to excel in the early years. In 1991, the name was changed to Great Lakes Storm. New players, improved chairs, and refined rules made the game faster and the collisions harder.
In 2005, the Storm was invited to South America by the Paralympic Committee of Colombia to demonstrate Wheelchair Rugby. The team did demonstrations in Bogota, Cartagena, Cali, and Medellin before crowds as large as 2000+ people. The seed they planted took root, as Colombia hosted the first Maximus international tournament only 18 months later where 3 Storm team members earned Gold Medals competing against Argentina, Canada, Brazil, and Colombia.
The Storm were Division Champions in 2006-2007, 2008-2009, and 2009-2010, with their best finish @ 8th place (of the 40+ teams in the United States). In the summer of 2010, the team helped start a second team in the state by coaching, practicing with, mentoring, and playing in several tournaments with the Grand Rapids Thunder.
New players are ALWAYS welcome! Contact our team rep to find out the time and date of the next practice.
